"Indeed," she murmured. Then, when he spoke again, she blinked several times, then couldn't help it. She began giggling. She'd never done so before, so the sound was a little rough, but still noticeably giggles. "You didn't remember that?" she said, still snickering softly. "And no, you're fine. In fact, I think I'd prefer being with you at this point. You at least understand what I've been through and will respect my space. Someone else might not." She winked at him, then looked up as the Captain's voice came over the shuttle intercom, announcing they were ready to leave and would all passengers please put on their safety straps and be sure they were secure? "Time to go," she said quietly, even as she secured her own and checked on him to be sure his were as well.
It felt strange, worrying about someone else's safety this way, she thought. But they were to be partners, in a way, so best to be sure she kept him in line and safe.

Blaine flushed lightly as she started giggling, but was smiling anyway. He got himself buckled in safely before he addressed her again. "I understand the need for space, but yes I forget sometimes. I've never really thought of myself and thought 'I am a "boy" grr,' you know? I'm just.. me. It doesn't usually come up and I've never had a.. partner so it hasn't been an issue there."

"Fair enough," Marielle replied mildly, her eyes flicking to the window beside her as she sensed the shuttle begin moving underneath her, watching the scenery go by, faster and faster. Taking a deep breath, she looked back to Blaine, assessing how he was doing with a simple glance. "Are you excited?" she asked curiously, wondering how many others were looking forward to this new adventure, and how many felt guilty and heartbreak for the ones that had to be left behind...
She shook off the thought swiftly, refusing to let herself dwell on it, even as she once more heard the grandmother's frantic plea ringing in her ears, and she sighed softly, dropping her eyes to her scarred hands, the testament to her survival, her determination. No. She would not be trapped like that again. She refused to be a prisoner anymore to her fear, to the pain.

He took a moment to consider her question. "I'm.. intrigued." He said slowly, mulling it over. "The work I will be doing is exciting. The prospect of being somewhere other than here is.. a complicated feeling. Earth has been home, in spite of how intensely we trashed it. And with how toxic it is- how do they choose which of us are worth taking really? How have we not gathered up all the children and their teachers and sent them off together?"

"I keep asking myself that," Mari said softly, a pained tone behind her words. "It's not fair to make them suffer for the stupidity of adults. They should be given a chance to live, to learn from our mistakes and hopefully not make them themselves." Again the grandmother's words rang in her ears and she cringed noticeably, looking out the window once again. "They should have been the FIRST ones to go. They're our FUTURE damnit! We should not be selfish, but at the same time..."

Blaine sighed softly and nodded, watching her a moment before he looked out the window himself. "At the same time, there's only so many spots open. They need the ones who can pay to fund the travel of those us they need. People who can figure out where we're going, make it safe, make a place for them to join us." He turned his head back to her. "That's how we have to think about it. The people left behind need us to succeed."

She made a low sound of agreement, understanding what he was saying but obviously not still pleased with it. "I know they do, but it still pains me. They don't deserve to be left behind while the rest of us leave. Who knows how many of them will be lost before they can come as well?" She shook her dark head and rested her chin in her palm, her eyes intense as they looked out and down. A world that had once been green and blue and beautiful, now brown and dirty, all because of the stupidity and reckless wastefulness of the human race. Air that had once given life and been clean and clear, now brown and grungy and silently killing millions...

Blaine looked from the window and back at her, watching her quietly for a long moment. There wasn't anything he could say to make her feel better about it. He slid his foot out across the space between them and nudged it gently against her's, just a light pressure but unobtrusive.
He turned his attention back to the window, watching the world slip out from under them. When would he see it again?
