Many of the more sensitive seeds, such as tea and some of the rice variations, were lost due to the salty nature of the air and thus the soil. More hardy varieties were manipulated in the grow tanks that the people managed to save, and adjusted to accommodate the salty soil. Thus, certain varieties of rice, legumes, wheat, barley and some types of fruits such as apples, peaches and bananas have managed to survive. Corn and potatoes and carrots are other crops that have been brought, although the potatoes and carrots, being a root vegetable, had to be modified as well, leading some to say they've lost their 'classic' taste(lessness) -in the case of the potatoes- and have become sweeter and more fruit-like in the case of the carrots. Sadly, certain varieties of berry, such as blueberries, raspberries and strawberries were lost, although the hardy blackberry brambles somehow managed to thrive and are now having to be trimmed back due to their quick and extensive growth. The farmers are trying to keep grapes and coffee alive, but are finding it an uphill struggle, for the grape vines require such delicate circumstances. Vintners are hunting high and low for the perfect land for them, and there is fierce competition between the three main coffee growers for the right soil and location as well, leading to some high tempers at times.
All sorts of animals can be found here, from horses and cattle to pigs, chickens, ducks and some turkeys. Geese used to live here, but they escaped and can now be found living in the nearby marsh, though their numbers are dwindling due to an unknown predator, and many fear they will soon be lost altogether if they cannot be rounded up again and cared for. Among the human-based animals one can find dogs, cats, some varieties of rodent that stowed away on the ship or were purposely brought(such as hamsters, guinea pigs and smaller mice and rats), as well as an odd new breed of chinchilla that is being bred and raised for its long, luxurious fur. The types of animals brought were intended almost solely for work or to provide food of some sort, with few brought strictly to be pets. These include mainly draft horses, with few lighter exceptions such as Morgans and Quarter Horses for their cattle and sheep-driving abilities, oxen, jersey and angus cattle for milk and meat, working Class dogs such as Huskies, Mastiffs, Border Collies and German Shepards. Cats were brought along to hunt vermin and protect human habitations from infestation, and most of the intentionally brought smaller rodents' only purpose was as test subjects.
As mentioned in the title, this thread will be continuously updated as more species of plant and animal are discovered that the humans can use.
